Caramel latte or upside down caramel macchiato sans vanilla?
Today's order: Tall nonfat caramel latte w/ extra caramel. I watched the barista make the drink (caramel on the sides of the cup, milk, espresso followed by caramel on top). I was confused - isn't espresso over milk the signature of a macchiato? Lattes should have espresso first and then the milk on top.
Then the barista called out my order: caramel macchiato with extra caramel instead of vanilla. Um, okay. Technically, I could have ordered an upside down caramel macchiato w/ extra caramel instead of vanilla ($3.15; caramel, espresso, milk, caramel), but why would I, considering a caramel latte w/ extra caramel is just $3.00? And if you have a Starbucks card, you save the 30 cents on the syrup, so it was just $2.70.
I wasn't trying to cheat the system - I just wanted a drink w/ lots of caramel :) And it doesn't make sense that a caramel latte w/ extra caramel costs only $3.00, while an upside-down caramel macchiato w/ caramel instead of vanilla is $3.15. It's the exact same thing. Ya know? Not to mention that the cup was marked for a latte, not caramel mach.
Thankfully, I don't really know the difference (taste-wise) between a latte (or upside down macchiato) and a macchiato (or upside down latte). Especially not with loads of caramel on it - they all taste the same!
