I love going back and reading emails from like 3 years ago. It's funny to see what I thought was so uber-important back then and how trivial it all seems now.
My then-coworker asked me to help her peruse resumes for an assistant. Here are some of my comments that I gave her:
- On resume, states that she has excellent writing and editing ability - but there are several grammar and punctuation errors in the email...
- May be used to doing things her way (she's a teacher, after all, and teachers usually are in command of the classroom).
- Low GPA (probably shouldn't have listed it on the resume).
- Her interests include browsing the internet and chatting on AIM? (I don't think I'd list that on my resume).**
- probably would be more interested in teaching Spanish.
- no college coursework, too liberal
- too liberal. "IM" is not a skill.
- only average writing skills.
- tree-hugger type. Would be more interested in research than in clerical work.
- A bit arrogant.
Obviously, you can't tell what a person is like from paper but I think you can tell a lot about what a person writes/includes.
** This candidate was the one that my coworker decided to hire... and eventually fire (after a couple of months). See what I mean?
I posted a vent-ish comment on my page (on a social networking site). I admit - was not a nice comment (remember Paul Pierce's miraculous recovery from a sprained knee during last year's Finals game?), but I was frustrated so I vented. I didn't name names and wasn't too specific. People on my contact list on the site probably could figure out who I was talking about.
Got a vm this morning but didn't see it until later - someone needed to talk to me about something very important. When I heard this, I KNEW it had to be about the comment.
Basically that it was totally uncool what I posted, that as someone in my position, I just "can't do that". I simply said "ok, I'll take it down" and did (person didn't even have to ask me to).
Honestly, I really don't care. Kick me out - I'm begging you! Said person is not on my contact list - my guess is that someone on my list saw, and told her. Why didn't that someone just tell me directly that I should take it down. Seriously, anyone could have said "take down that comment" and I would have. I am snarky (though it takes me a good amount of time to think of comebacks) but I don't think I'm seriously mean-spirited or particularly callous. So I wouldn't have put up a fight even though I could.
Anyway, I don't feel bad whatsoever. I do acknowledge that the timing was not the best (the next week was already going to be interesting) but other than that, I expressed my opinion and that's that. Don't like it, don't read it. And don't go snooping either.
Today was one of the most ADD days ever. Our lunch was supposed to be 40 minutes long - and ended up being 1 hr (most everyone was in the lunch area talking about whatever - even the choreographer). Then we rehearsed for about 1 hr 10 mins (which basically consisted of walking through the piece, clarifying some shapes - no real dancing) and then we got another break. Which was supposed to last for 5 minutes or so but ended up lasting for 50 minutes.
So yeah, I feel like we didn't get anything done today, but whatever. The problem is that the choreographer starts telling stories and then people ask questions and before you know it, 10 minutes have passed.
Somehow, we got to talking about politics. Everyone is so surprised that I'm a Republican (many art-sy types plus young people are generally Democrats or liberals). And then they wanted to know who I was going to vote for (probably Giuliani), what did I think about gun control, stem cell research, gay rights, etc etc. Seriously, I felt like I was a candidate being grilled.
The most important issue to me (or one of the most important) is illegal immigration. Plus foreign policy, not necessarily Iraq/Middle East but like Taiwan and China. Some other issues, I simply don't have an opinion about.
Other people have other issues they consider to be more important - and thus, would choose different candidates, which is just fine. Except that some of those girls thought Hilary Clinton was a Republican.... and that her husband was a Republican.
What in the world are they teaching in American schools these days?!
